FOOD POISONING, CONTAMINATION AND SAFETY

Food Poisoning is the experience of falling sick after eating a food. There are many things that may cause food poisoning or food spoilage.

Micro-organism causes food poisoning and they are:

BACTERIAS examples Staphylococcus

VIRUSES

MOLD AND TOXINS

YEASTS

PARASITES.

Symptoms of food poisoning are: Stomach pain, Weakness, Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting, Fever or Chits/sweating.

Food Contamination can be defined as the presence of harmful micro-organism and chemicals in food which causes illness or sickness to the consumers.

The sources of food contamination includes the following:

  1. Water
  2. Soil
  3. Air
  4. Packaging materials
  5. Cooking equipment
  6. Insect
  7. Micro-organisms
  8. Parasites
  9. Naturally occurring toxins

The signs of food Spoilage include:

  • Unpleasant odour
  • Change in colour
  • Undesirable taste
  • Presence of mold
  • Change in texture
  • Change in appearance unlike its fresh form.
